Beatles Predicted Loneliness in Old Age in “Eleanor Rigby”

January 6, 2008 · No Comments

Remember the words Paul McCartney sings in Eleanor Rigby?

Eleanor Rigby died in the church and was buried along with her name
Nobody came
Father McKenzie wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from the grave
No one was saved

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?

The lyrics are a poignant tale of loneliness in old age. In an age where familes are geographically dispersed over large distances and increasingly the traditional sense of community is disappearing, it appears that there are many more modern day Eleanor Rigbys. As an example read the sad tale of Olive Archer and then listen to the Beatles Eleanor Rigby in the video below.

Does Gordon Brown Find Decision Making Difficult?

January 6, 2008 · No Comments

Gordon BrownI’ve just watched Gordon Brown being “interviewed” by Andrew Marr on his BBC1 show. I lost count of the number of times our PM said he would take the “difficult decisions”. He said it  so many times, that he started to sound as if he found decision making difficult. Rumour has it that he does indeed find decision making difficult…..hence the botched election that never happened.

At the end, he was introduced to singer & HIV awareness campaigner, Annie Lennox.  As they sat on the couch & Marr introduced them Gordon made a move toward Annie, presumably to give her the Hollywood hug but, then self consciously retreated as she didn’t respond. It really is painful watching this highly introverted politician try to come to terms with the visual media.
